It's the kind of projects we do on a Saturday.
We finished the fence we started last year.
We did away with some big flower beds and made some smaller ones.
Spreading 95 bags of mulch every year was getting to be a bit much.
We like to get up early and dig trenches.
We lay electrical lines and because we are both perfectionists and always one step ahead,
we lay water lines for future sprinkler systems at the same time.
We work well together. We built a whole house this way.
The Tool Man crawls under the house to drill a hole and connect wires to
the already existing switch he put on the porch when he built the house.
We don't forget a hook up for Christmas lights. Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus will be happy this year.
We later paint the outlet black ....perfectionists.
I finally have my light in the middle of my circular drive.
This lead to purchasing a flag and adding another flower bed.
Yes, we could have put in a solar light, but that's not how we roll.
Don't be too impressed. We bought this lamp 6 years ago when we built the house.
We had plans, but we ran out of steam.
Another ongoing project has been adding stone in places like the bottom of the front porch,
and around an inside edge of the driveway.
Wonder why we need a sprinkler system living on a dry hill in Florida?
Working with stone is like working with puzzle pieces.
You have to make them fit together.
While Tool Man puts puzzle pieces together, I find states.
Hey! don't mess with Texas.
I'll share the process with few words so as not to bore you.
We had started the retaining wall but never finished the top cap and steps.
We fit the pieces together and draw a line where they need to be cut.
Then lay them back down in alphabetical order by state on the ground.
Not really.
Get Tool Man to cut where you just drew the line.
Mix the concrete and lay the stone back on.
Fitting them together as you go.
Do some cake decorating to fill in the cracks.
Get Tool Man to turn blocks over and secure them in place.
I just love a man with the right tools for everything.
Continue on the steps with the same above process until you have this.....
It makes me smile everyday.
The steps lead from our garage through an arbor that wisteria is slowly covering,
to this sidewalk that we finished a few years ago.
We re-did this walkway 3 times before we got it the way we wanted it.
(sigh).
Here is the finished retaining wall next to the steps.
Yeah, I won't lie, this really was an all day little Saturday project.
Like anything worth having, it takes work.
Like anything worth having, it takes work.
I think we are done with the stones now.
Well, I do want just a simple stone pathway all the way around the house...
We have stopped making lists. It's too overwhelming.
We are still working on edging around the driveway with brick.
We only have one more section to finish.
I've already started planting flowers. I'm ready for spring.
I love working together on Saturdays.
We're taking off this Saturday. We've decided not to work.

Your attention to detail is so inspiring, Betty. What a wonderful job you and your husband did on the wall and sidewalk! I'm really looking forward to seeing your garden as the weather warms up!

Okay, I am writing down the date of this post and saving it for when I want to motivate/shame my husband into actually finishing some of his planned projects outside! Of course, I know he is going to focus on the part where you say you helped your husband do all of this. Maybe I can get him to just look at the pictures and not read that part.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful! That retaining wall and walkway and steps are really nice! And your house sits on a hill in Florida? We lived there for 3 years and I had to get my husband to drive to Mt. Dora every Sunday afternoon just so I could see hills, I missed them so much.
I am so impressed, Betty!! That is just beautiful!! Lots of hard work; lots of good reward!! Happy Valentine's Day! blessings ~ tanna
